SAT-U05 / Visual concept

Two equations.
One answer that fits both.

Forty ticket icons, two constraints and an independently checked three-step solution

A valid ticket mix satisfies both attendance and revenue.

  • 40 tickets20 adults + 20 students
  • $40020 × $12 + 20 × $8
  • $4 per upgrade$80 extra revenue requires 20 upgrades

An event sells 40 tickets. Adult tickets cost $12, student tickets cost $8 and total revenue is $400. Let a and s be the adult and student counts. How many of each were sold?

SAT-U05 / Worked case

Two equations.
One answer that fits both.

Forty ticket icons, two constraints and an independently checked three-step solution
  1. 1

    Start with students

    Keep all 40 tickets at the lower price: 40 × $8 = $320.

  2. 2

    Find the extra

    The actual revenue is $400 - $320 = $80 higher. Each adult replacing a student adds $12 - $8 = $4.

  3. 3

    Count the upgrades

$80 ÷ $4 = 20 adult tickets. The other 20 are student tickets. Both counts are nonnegative whole numbers.

Why does 30 adults plus 10 students fail?

It gives 40 tickets but $440. Check both constraints: 20 + 20 = 40 and 12 × 20 + 8 × 20 = $400.

Algebra check: s = 40 - a, so 12a + 8(40 - a) = 400; 4a = 80. A plausible count must also satisfy the original revenue.

A more deliberate study routine

Make the next session a useful one.

Use the guide in manageable sessions: review an idea, try it yourself and work through the explanation before moving on.

  1. 01

    Start with the idea

Review a focused lesson and follow the worked reasoning before attempting a new activity.

  2. 02

    Practise with a purpose

Work through original tasks. Note the decisions you found difficult instead of checking only the final answer.

  3. 03

    Understand and return

Read the explanation, record the error and use it to shape a more focused follow-up session.

The scope, clearly stated

Know what you are choosing.

178 PDF pages. 320 numbered practice bank activities: 160 Reading and Writing and 160 Math, plus 75 lesson activities across 15 progressive units. Includes a two-page illustrated visual lesson.

Reader feedback

  • Punctuation finally makes sense

I like that the punctuation example explains the choice instead of just giving the answer. Looking for complete sentences first makes the semicolon and comma choices much easier to follow. The short explanation of why another choice fails is especially helpful when the options all sound reasonably natural.

    Emily M.

  • A useful second check

The ticket problem is easy to follow, and the extra check is a nice touch. You can test the answer against both the attendance and the money collected, rather than trust the algebra alone.

    James P.

  • Worth checking the original

The radical-equation walkthrough is particularly helpful. It shows how an extra answer can appear during the calculation, then takes you back to the original equation to check whether it actually works.

    Olivia L.

  • A distinction worth slowing down for

The comparison of sampling and random assignment needs a careful read, but it earns its space. It separates who a result applies to from whether the study can support a claim about cause.

    Daniel H.

  • More than spotting disagreement

The paired passages give a clear example of one study limiting another study's conclusion. I appreciate having the relationship explained, rather than treating every difference between two texts as a disagreement.
