ELEM-U14 / Visual concept
Capacity counts cubic units; material counts only actual faces.
An open rectangular box has a 4 cm by 3 cm base and height 2 cm. Find its capacity and material area. The net fits inside an 8 cm by 7 cm rectangle.
ELEM-U14 / Worked case
Capacity = 4 × 3 × 2 = 24 cm³. Volume measures space inside, not cardboard material.
Base 12 + two long sides 16 + two short sides 12 = 40 cm². There is no top.
The 8 × 7 bounding rectangle is 56 cm². Four blank 2 × 2 corners total 16 cm²; 56 - 16 = 40 cm².
The corresponding closed box: adding a 4 × 3 top adds 12 cm². It answers a different question.
If all lengths scale by k, face areas scale by k² and volume by k³. Keep squared and cubed units distinct; the net diagram is schematic.
A practical study routine
Use the guide actively: make a decision before checking the answer, then bring the lesson into your next attempt.
Step 1
Start with a concept and a worked example in one subject.
Step 2
Attempt practice without the response notes.
Step 3
Write the evidence that corrected your reasoning before rotating subjects.

The phonemic-awareness and phonics examples start with what the pupil actually does. Hearing a sound and decoding print become distinct tasks, which makes the suggested teaching response easier to understand. The contrast between the spoken and printed tasks also gives the next teaching question a reason, instead of treating all reading difficulties alike.
The recipe example explains division as the number of batches that fit. I like the leftover check because it makes the reciprocal part of an understandable situation, rather than a rule to apply blindly.
The seasons example gives the globe model a useful job. Keeping the axis consistent lets the explanation check opposite seasons at the same time, rather than relying on a picture without testing what it predicts.
The reading-log calculation makes the group sizes matter. Rebuilding the total explains why averaging the group averages equally can answer a different question. That is a small example with a useful lesson behind it.
The forces explanation separates balanced forces on one object from a third-law pair on two objects. Identifying the object before adding forces makes the distinction much easier to follow in the example.
