EMT-U12 / Visual concept
Dead space applies to every breath, not once per minute.
In a simplified model, A breathes 12/min at 500 mL/breath; B breathes 30/min at 200 mL/breath. Both use fixed dead space of 150 mL/breath. These supplied volumes are invented teaching data.
EMT-U12 / Worked case
Minute volume = rate × tidal volume. A: 12 × 500 = 6,000 mL/min. B: 30 × 200 = 6,000 mL/min.
Modeled alveolar volume: A = 12 × (500 - 150) = 4,200 mL/min; B = 30 × (200 - 150) = 1,500 mL/min.
B has 1,500/4,200 = 5/14, about 35.7%, of A’s modeled useful volume despite equal total minute volume.
Dead space applies to every breath. Subtract it from each tidal volume first, then multiply by breaths per minute.
Assume Vt exceeds fixed Vd. This model does not measure real gas exchange, perfusion or patient volumes; assess patient findings, effective chest rise and trained monitoring. Values are not clinical targets.
A practical study routine
Use the guide actively: make a decision before checking the answer, then bring the lesson into your next attempt.
Step 1
State what is observed and what could change the priority.
Step 2
Use the role, protocol, and facts supplied by the scenario.
Step 3
Review reassessment and communication as part of the decision.

The handoff model keeps the changing findings and unresolved concerns visible. I like that it separates doing an intervention from showing a response, without filling in missing measurements as though they were normal. The separation between reported information and observations gives the model a practical structure that is easy to refer back to.
The ventilation example explains the subtraction for dead space rather than just handing over a formula. It makes it clear why the same total minute volume can hide a different useful alveolar volume.
The neurological reassessment case shows why an unchanged total can hide important changes. I appreciate seeing the timed eye, verbal and motor findings retained instead of reducing the comparison to a single number.
The transport example separates work that happens together from travel that happens afterward. Rechecking the times after a delay makes the earlier comparison useful without pretending its advantage always stays the same.
The pediatric case doesn't treat slower breathing as an automatic improvement. The explanation checks movement and responsiveness together, and keeps the response within the supplied protocol rather than giving an unbounded instruction.
